Organizational Forms and Agri-Environmental Practices: The Case of Brazilian Dairy Farms

Understanding the connection between the organizational traits of a farm and its environmental efficiency is crucial to help the agro-ecological transition of farms. This is much more necessary as only a few research on the topic have been undertaken and as there’s a rising variety of organizational kinds of farms that differ from the normal household mannequin. This paper proposes a comprehensively built-in strategy of dairy farms in Brazil. A case research of six archetypes of farms with contrasted organizational traits is developed to discover the relations between, on the one hand, farms’ organizational construction and governance, and alternatively, the adoption of agri-environmental practices. Results present that the adoption of agri-environmental practices varies throughout the wide selection of farm’s organizational kinds—from the household to the economic fashions. Farms with restricted inside assets rely extra particularly on exterior sectoral or territorial assets to implement environmental practices. If the surroundings is conducive to the creation of incentives and coordination mechanisms underlying studying processes, farms will undertake agri-environmental practices, regardless of they’re organized. The creation of native cooperatives, farmer’s networks and universities extension applications can strengthen farmers’ absorption, adaptation and transformation capacities and enhance the adoption of environmental practices. Finally, contemplating farms as heterogeneous organizational kinds in phrases of human capital, assets, market, and informational entry is crucial to speed up the agroecological transition.
