LONDON — A hospital worker in Italy has reportedly been accused of taking home greater than 538,000 euros ($648,000) in pay, despite having by no means turned up for work in 15 years.
Salvatore Scumace, 66, had reportedly been assigned to work within the fireplace emergency operations heart of the Pugliese Ciaccio hospital, within the metropolis of Catanzaro, Calabria, in Italy.
However, based on a report Tuesday by Italian information company Ansa, Scumace had not been to work since he was employed in 2005.
Scumace is alleged to be dealing with expenses of fraud, extortion and abuse of workplace, following an investigation by the Guardia di Finanza, which is Italy’s monetary legislation enforcement company.
Six managers on the hospital have additionally reportedly been put beneath investigation in reference to the case.
Scumace was even mentioned to have resorted to threatening a supervisor and her household, to cease her reporting his absenteeism.
Neither the Catanzaro public prosecutor’s workplace, nor the Pugliese Ciaccio hospital, had responded to CNBC’s request for remark on the time of publication.
Absenteeism is alleged to be rampant in Italy’s public sector, based on reports by the Guardian, with the federal government making an attempt to crack down on it in 2016.
